I am sure this is one of many blogs that will emerge to cover the Samsung Tablet range. A month ago I tried to set up a Tab related blog on blogger.com but all of the obvious URLs had already been taken!
However this blog is going to be different in that I intend to be one of the first real (ie non-journalist) owners of the new Samsung Galaxy Tab and am genuinely looking forward to it’s release.
In this post I explain why I plan to get hold of one and what I hope it will do for me.
Why Do I Want to Buy a Tablet?
The tablet concept has always seemed like a good idea to me, ever since I started to investigate netbooks 2 years ago I secretly hoped that something like this would come along.
There were “tablets” around back then, but they were expensive and didn’t really meet my needs.
Here is what I think looks good in the Galaxy Tablet:
- Android Powered. Sorry Apple, I think your products are cool, but I much prefer working on open systems. As someone who loves to tinker, experiment and use gadgets in the way that I want this is a massive factor in my purchase choice.
- 7″ screen. I’ve seen a few iPads in action and I just think they are too big. I could be wrong on this, but the smaller form factor seems like a good thing right now.
- AMOLED screen. Specs aren’t confirmed yet but I expect the Tab to have one of Samsung’s fantastic clear and bright screens.
- Touch control. Touch interfaces seem to be a natural evolution, I still think they will work best in tandem with other input devices, but for a tablet it seems ideal
What do I hope to do with a Tablet?
Here are some things I hope the tablet will be good for:
- Media player. I don’t have an MP3 player in my living room, a touch controlled devices which allows me to quickly pick out my tunes seems a necessity. If it can play movies to then that would be a bonus.
- Reading Documents. I have a lot to read, both professionally and personally, and most of this documentation now comes in PDFs, Word Docs, or just plain old text.
- Casual browsing. My netbook was awesome when it came to bringing the Internet to my living room, and I hope a tablet can go a step further. Many TV programs have companion websites and it will be great to have an accessible device by my side.
- Commuting. My netbook is a regular feature in my commuting bag. But sometimes it would be nice to have a smaller lighter device – depedning on what I’m doing of course.
What Will SammyTablet Provide?
I hope to provide an initial look at how useful the tablet really is, as an owner and mobile gadget fan I hope to be in a good position to feed back to other real users like you.
And don’t worry, I won’t be afraid to heap on the criticism if it is needed!
This site provides a burgeoning forum (we really need your help to get it started!) and an established wiki which we will stuff full of articles, guides and anything else Galaxy Tab related.
We’ll round up all the news and provide information on how to get the most out of your new tablet.
